Swapped (2026) is a worthy attempt at a Pixar film. It doesn’t quite reach the level of an Up or WALL-E. It does have a lot in common with Pixar’s latest, Hoppers, making them twin films, like Armageddon and Deep Impact. Despite the name (and twin film label), Swapped is not a body swap comedy. It’s more of a species swap comedy with a splash of fantasy thrown in — though it feels like the story is trying to tell you there is no fantasy or magic at work here.
The movie introduces us to a new (very marketable) species who live on an island in a flooded valley. Food is scarce. An optimistic pookoo named Ollie tries to help a young bird find food, and in doing so, makes life even harder for his (very marketable) species. He then sets out to find a new source of food for them. That’s when Ollie accidentally discovers a naturally sourced (totally not magical) pod that can transform one species into another and allow that individual to speak the language of all species.
It’s a little convoluted, right? Don’t worry. Ollie’s grandma will give you a cute little backstory to help it all make sense. You’ll then set forth on this (totally not fantasy) coming-of-age journey with the optimistic Ollie. He meets other species along the way. They learn they’re not so different. They just want to save their loved ones.
The voice cast is mostly excellent, including Tracy Morgan as a goofy fish and Juno Temple as a posh bird. But there’s something off about Michael B. Jordan’s portrayal of Ollie. He’s a fluffy chipmunk of a guy, but Jordan’s gravelly voice is a little too Killmonger – you know, his character from Black Panther that should’ve earned him an Oscar nomination but that’s a comic book movie and those simply aren’t Academy material. Jordan is trying his best to be cute and innocent, but sounds like post-puberty Peter Brady after being forced by Mike to smoke an entire pack of cigarettes. It’s a little off-putting at times.
Swapped is also a bit predictable. You’ve seen most of the story before in Ice Age, The Last Unicorn, The Secret of NIMH, and Hoppers. But that’s a pretty strong combo of movies to emulate, which is why Swapped is still worth a watch. The straight-to-streaming film has enough of its own charm to win you over. And the 3D animation is a step up from most movies that never reach the big screen. Sip on something light and bubbly, snuggle with the kiddos, and enjoy an accessible film that teaches, not preaches, compassion and open-mindedness.

Sequel? Swapped pulled in almost 39 million viewers in its first week on Netflix, beating the record set by KPop Demon Hunters. That means this film should have been released in theaters and it will likely get a sequel…eventually.
