Not Another Kid Movie FAQ

What is “Fresh-Squeezed Family Film Releases”?

It’s your once-a-month shortcut to everything new that’s actually worth watching with kids. Instead of digging through nine streaming apps or Googling trailers, I round up all new family movies hitting theaters, disc, and the major streamers. I add age recommendations so you can pick a feature film in minutes — instead of scrolling for 20 minutes and settling for two episodes of Wild Kratts before bedtime.

How do you decide the age recommendation for each movie?

I ignore the MPAA rating and go straight to how a movie feels to real kids — the intensity, emotional load, gore factor, pacing, and the stuff they’ll bring up at bedtime. If a movie labeled “PG” hits like a horror flick (Sketch, anyone?), I bump the age up. If a PG-13 is basically a superhero pillow fight, I drop it. I watch everything with a parent’s brain. What’s going to stick with them? What’s going to spark questions after the credits roll?

Why do your age ratings differ from Common Sense Media?

I’m writing for actual families trying to connect over a movie, some of which can be challenging. My system assumes kids are capable humans — just with different sensitivities. I look honestly at intensity, scary moments, and emotional punch without treating normal kid reactions like emergencies.

Do you ever warn parents about bad movies?

Absolutely, though not on this page. On my Reviews page, I’ll let you know if something is mind-numbingly boring, unnecessarily cruel, or generally unfunny. Sometimes the heads-up is “you’ll laugh twice after a beer.” Sometimes it’s “there’s not enough beer in the world.” I’ll have your back on family film night.

What makes this list different from other movie recommendation sites?

I’m a dad who watches almost every family movie that hits streamers and theaters — partly for my kids, partly because I genuinely love family movie night. That’s why Slash Film asked me to create its original list of the 95 Best Family Movies Ever. They’ve since added five additional movies that lean heavy on nostalgia more than other factors. I built this site to be a one-stop spot where parents can quickly find what’s worth watching, what to skip, and how to win family movie night for both you and your kids.
